Serving Our Forests & Communities

Mission Statement

"It is our mission to efficiently supply professional forest management services that promote the stewardship of the public and private forests of the Southwest and the communities that depend on them for current and future generations".

About US

Legacy Forest Management, LLC is a veteran-owned and operated forest management company based in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. For us we believe we are called to serve others through our calling to work in the forest. We recognize that people are a part of the land and have an interconnected relationship with our natural resources. We believe in serving the land as stewards and serving those that share our connection to our forests. Our forests face many challenges as do the people that depend on them. It is our goal to help both with such challenges through our experience, knowledge, and dedication. Our primary focus involves serving landowners of Non-Industrial Private Forests (NIPFs) in the Southwestern US. Our service area primarily focuses on Colorado and New Mexico but we also service Arizona, Utah, and Wyoming in order to get work accomplished on the ground while providing quality work for our clients.

Owner & Founder

Tyrell W. Mares

As a native to the Gila region of New Mexico, founder Tyrell Mares (Ty) developed a strong connection with the outdoors and the mountains of the Gila National Forest from an early age. Ty’s interest in forestry was further developed by his participation the Forestry Career Development Event (CDE) through FFA in middle school and high school. In 2007, Ty graduated from Silver High School in Silver City, NM and enlisted in the military in 2008. After 4 years of active duty in the US Army as an infantryman (11B), he left the military in 2012 to obtain his Bachelor’s of Science in Forestry where he graduated in 2017 from Colorado State University. Ty’s professional experience includes 6 years with the US Forest Service in various positions across USFS Regions 2 and 3 including working as a presale forester on the Rio Grande National Forest, specializing in timber sale preparation as part of the USFS Region 2 Timber Strike Team, and working out of the Region 3 Regional Office under top forest management staff as a forester trainee.

In 2019 he founded Legacy Forest Management, LLC which was founded as a forest management company that attempts to address the needs and gaps in forest management in places like Colorado and New Mexico. From forest thinning and wildfire mitigation projects in the San Luis Valley to completing specialized work including logging plan development and LiDar scan validation under the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) in Arizona, Ty is dedicated to the stewardship of our southwestern public and private forests and seeks to serve others with a spirit of of service that draws from both military and civilian experience.
